The lake lies still, mountains reflected in the water with the kind of clarity that only comes in certain early morning or late afternoon light. Takahashi, working in the shin hanga tradition alongside Hasui and others, brought a particular quietness to his landscapes less dramatic than some of his contemporaries, more concerned with the sustained feeling of a place than its pictorial impact.
