The match depicted was between the Victoria cricket team and George Parr's touring All England Eleven. This was the second tour by an English team to Australia. Judging by the size of the crowd this was a much anticipated event. In 1862 the first match between England and Victoria at the MCG attracted a crowd estimated to be around 25,000.
